Gardiner Expressway off-ramp to close until spring for reconstruction

As of Friday, the Gardiner Expressway’s westbound off-ramp at Sherbourne and Jarvis Sts. will be closed until next spring for reconstruction, the city says.

Crews will work mostly on a 24/7 basis to reduce the length of construction. Drivers will need to consider alternative routes during the construction period such as the Yonge-Bay-York off-ramp westbound on the expressway or the southbound Don Valley Parkway ramp that directs to Richmond St.

The westbound Gardiner Expressway will be reduced to two lanes from the Don Valley Parkway to just west of the off-ramp from 10 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Saturday as workers set up the construction zone.

The replacement of the ramp is part of the city’s most recent phase of work to rehabilitate the expressway between Jarvis and Cherry Sts., a key element of the city’s Gardiner Expressway strategic rehabilitation plan.

Another phase of construction is set to begin this month to replace the north half of the concrete deck and steel girders of the Gardiner Expressway between Jarvis and Cherry Sts. During the construction, the expressway will be reduced to two lanes in each direction between York St. and the Don Valley Pkwy., the city says.

The city says the section of the expressway between Jarvis and Cherry Sts. is nearing the end of its service life. The rehabilitation plan is intended to address the immediate and long-term needs of the entire expressway between Hwy. 427 and the Don Valley Parkway.
