Doors Open Markham is a gateway to unlocking the stories behind Markham’s architectural, cultural spaces and diverse experiences! The September 7 event will feature 25 sites across Markham.
Step into the world of robotics, video game programming and young entrepreneurship at at YSpace, York University's state-of-the-art community engagement centre, located in Markham Centre. Enjoy free carousel rides on the one-of-a-kind Pride of Canada Carousel! Or view the stunning design of the Wong Dai Sin Temple, home to the Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism, which won the 2016 Governor General's Medal for Architecture.
From the art gallery to the carousel, business hubs to community centres, sacred spaces to historical gems, Doors Open Markham is a free day-long community-wide celebration that’s fun for the whole family.
"Doors Open Markham gives you an inside look into Markham’s identity, rich history, vibrancy and unique global feel," says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "This is your chance to go behind the scenes and discover fascinating architectural and historical gems, cultural and innovative hubs. It’s like a vacation in your own backyard and a great way to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the founding of Markham."
Each stop will feature FREE unique activities including guided tours by local progammers, ghost stories, live music, workshops, model train demonstrations, carousel rides, art exhibitions, family fun activities and much more.

"As Canada’s most diverse city, people have come here from all over the world and now call Markham home. We are proud to welcome back past participants and add new ones that reflect Markham’s diverse communities. Looking forward to meeting you at one of the sites this year!"
Doors Open Markham is organized by the City of Markham Doors Open Committee. This event is one of a series of Doors Open events held across the province under the organizational umbrella of the Ontario Heritage Trust - Doors Open Ontario.

- Enjoy free carousel rides on the Pride of Canada Carousel's 44 whimsical and sculptural characters. This one-of-kind solar-powered carousel was created by artist Patrick Amoit from recycled and repurposed materials collected across Canada.
- Aaniin Community Centre & Library is like no other community centre you've seen before. Recreation Services will be running an Open House and Markham Public Library will host a series of STEAM workshops for kids. Find out why this is our most popular community centre!
- The Wong Dai Sin Temple is home to the Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism, and won the 2016 Governor General's Medal for Architecture.
- Visit the Vaults at the Varley Art Gallery! Enjoy gallery and vault tours at the home of Frederick Varley’s fine collection of oils, watercolours and drawings. See hidden gems of artwork rarely on display.
- Stop by Markham's first craft brewery for a taste of Rouge River Brewing Company's award-winning American style ales, sour beers and Belgian farmhouse style ales. No need to visit Liberty Village when this is right in town!
- Enjoy live music at the Heintzman House - one of the oldest buildings in Markham (100+ years). Over the years, the property has passed through many hands including its final private owner, Charles Theodore Heintzman in 1930. In 1966, the house was purchased by theTown of Markham (now City of Markham) and in 1984, the Heintzman House received the designation as a heritage site under the Ontario Heritage Act.
- Model train displays and activities can be seen at Markham Village Train Station. When the railway opened in 1871, the station and the area became a busy hub of commercial and industrial activity. Learn how trains have changed our history.
