Plant a tree and get a $100 rebate.

Fall is the optimal time to plant trees as the weather allows them to properly develop root systems, promoting a stronger growth period when spring arrives.

Newmarket residents can take advantage of the Town of Newmarket and Local Enhancement and Appreciation Forests’ (LEAF) tree planting rebate program.

“We as a community are committed to combating climate change and reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions through environmental initiatives such as this tree planting partnership with LEAF,” Mayor John Taylor said. “Your participation in this program will help increase the town’s tree canopy, divert approximately 36,000 litres of stormwater run-off and protect the environment from pollutants that enter our waterways.”

On average, one tree can reduce a property’s stormwater run-off by 720 litres.

Beyond that, trees remove pollutants from the air, reduce residents’ energy and water usage and beautify the community.

Planting more trees can also reduce water and energy use, create habitats for animals and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

This program was developed as a thank you to residents for supporting the town’s stormwater management program and will offer residents a $100 rebate when they plant a LEAF tree in their yard.

Rebates are issued on a first-come-first-served basis due to limited supply. Trees are also being limited to one tree per property.

There are both full-service, in-person consultations with an arborist in your yard, or do-it-yourself for those who want to get their hands dirty options are available by LEAF, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the urban forest and offering programs that help people plant, care for and give trees.

This rebate can also be combined with the York Region Emerald Ash Borer Rebate for one tree.
