Vaughan auto parts maker lands $2.5M from FedDev, creates 50 jobs

Investment will help Global Plas expand

A nine-year-old manufacturer of plastic parts for cars in Concord has received nearly $2.5 million contribution from FedDev Ontario, Vaughan-Woodbridge MP Francesco Sorbara announced Thursday, Aug. 22.

While the investment for Global Plas Inc. is to push the expansion of the facility and its scale of operations as well as to create 50 jobs, but it also shows that the company isn’t “alone,” its Director of Finance and Material Planning and Logistics John Hunjan said.

“The ever-changing environment in North America shows that Canadian companies, both large and small, need to push further than they ever have,” Hunjan said.

“Support from the Government of Canada, through FedDev Ontario, shows that we are not alone and can be the leaders in our fields, bringing us into an age of robotic technologies that give us an edge in our industry.”

Global Plas, a supplier of molded plastic parts to Tier 1 automotive manufacturers, is currently working to manufacture door and fender parts for the all-new Toyota RAV4 following a five-year contract with Toyota Canada Inc.

The Toyota RAV4 is Canadian-made at its primary manufacturing location in Woodstock.

Established in 2010, Global Pas has seen its production increasing to 480,000 sets per year, and it’s purchasing a higher volume of raw materials, which positively affects the automotive parts supply chain across southern Ontario.

FedDev Ontario says its contribution has allowed Global Plas to renovate its new 71,000-square-foot facility, add new production lines, and install four injection molding machines and automation equipment.

This announcement was made on behalf of Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister who is responsible for FedDev Ontario.

“Canada’s automotive industry plays a key role in our economy. Investing in companies in this industry, like Global Plas Inc., boosts our economy, strengthens our competitiveness and creates good, well-paying jobs for Canadians,” said Bains.

Outside Canada, Global Pas has customers in the United States and Japan.
