Landmark initiative builds upon expansion in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre

Ministry of Environment approves City-led Black Creek environmental assessment to spur continued sustainable development

The City of Vaughan is pleased to announce that the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, is moving ahead with the City’s flood prevention initiative in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC). Known as the Black Creek Renewal Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Project (Black Creek Renewal Class EA Study), this new action plan is essential in continuing the development in Vaughan’s downtown core.

The approved Study will allow the City to implement effective flood control measures, enhance the natural heritage system and beautify the public realm through the renewal of the VMC’s Black Creek valley corridor between Highway 7 and Highway 407.

The VMC continues to attract transformational investments, including the arrival of Niagara University -- Vaughan’s first post-secondary institution. The PwC-YMCA Tower, Transit City, The MET and the KPMG Tower are among some of the many other developments shaping Vaughan’s rapidly growing and distinctive skyline. The implementation of this project will also further contribute to the mandate of the VMC Sub-Committee, chaired by Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, to transform this area into a vibrant urban core. It will serve as a key catalyst in positioning Vaughan as a destination of choice for economic prosperity.

• The VMC is projected to include:
• 1.5 million square feet of office space by 2031
• 750,000 square feet of retail space
• 12,000 residential units to be home to 25,000 people
• employment targets of 11,500 jobs, of which 5,000 will be new office jobs
