In honour of Canadian war veterans on Warriors' Day Aug. 17, free transit will be offered to war veterans and immediate family members of deceased veterans.
York Region Transit is allowing veterans and one companion to travel for free, all day long on Warrior's Day.
Veteran can identify themselves to YRT and Mobility Plus operators by showing any of the following items: uniforms, medals, berets or blazers.
Immediate family of a deceased veteran may also ride for free by carrying something that identifies their relationship to the deceased veteran, such as an identification card or service papers.
Metrolinx will also be honouring the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans by offering free transportation to and from the Warriors' Day Parade on Aug. 17.
All past and present members of the Canadian Armed Forces, along with a companion, will be given free access to GO Transit buses and trains, as well as the Union Pearson Express.
Go Transit is asking that all serving members and veterans to identify themselves by wearing their medals, beret, blazer or uniforms while travelling.
Anyone wishing to wear civilian clothing should bring service papers or a Canadian Forces identification card.
Immediate family members of deceased veterans may also ride for free to the CNE in Toronto on Aug. 17, and are asked to carry something to identify their relationship to the late veteran, such as service papers.
Since 1921, the Warriors' Day Parade has taken place during the opening weekend of the CNE. It's the longest-running annual parade of its kind in Canada, and is an important tradition to honour those who have served or are serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.
