On Saturday, July 6, the City of Markham will officially open two beautiful parks, celebrating important residents in our community and history.

Tony Murphy is a life-long resident of Unionville, one of Markham's - and arguably Ontario's - most endearing villages. His volunteerism has earned him the Mayor's Seniors' Hall of Fame Award as well as the Queen's Jubilee Medal for volunteerism. He is an honourary member of the Canadian Legion, and the founder and 20-year Director of the Seniors' Extravanganza. The Tony Murphy Park is located in the heart of Unionville, where visitors and locals can relax among eight colourful muskoka chairs, surrounding a newly planted Freeman's Maple tree.

“Tony has brought so much joy to many through his immense charitable contributions and outstanding community involvement,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “His countless accomplishments include various honourary lifetime achievement awards, not to mention his hard work as the producer of the Senior’s Extravaganza for the past 20 years. Tony’s determination is unwavering, his kindness is inspirational and we thank him for his leadership and for enriching the lives of many in our community.”

William Cantley Park is one of several across Markham that recognizes important people in Markham's past. Located in Victoria Square, not far from the inn that he established in 1837 where he was the first inn-keeper. William Cantley Park offers children, parents, youth and seniors the chance to get out, mingle and stay active. This lovely park with playgrounds, pergola, basketball court and pathway is fast becoming the newest hub for this growing community - much like the inn that William managed in the mid-1830's. Inns were important rest stops for travellers and farmers, and social hubs for local residents where political meetings and entertainments of all kinds took place. Markham's motto, Leading While Remembering, is a strong tie that links our past to our future, ensuring all our communities continue to grow in strength, diversity and harmony.

Join us on Saturday to honour these Markham residents, and enjoy these new parks which enhance our community.
