The summer months are here and East Gwillimbury is just a quick drive from many great waterways. Boats can be a great source of summer entertainment for many of our local residents.

However, there are also unique dangers you should be aware of such as electrical hazards and carbon monoxide dangers. Below are some helpful safety tips to keep you safe on the water this summer.

When operating a boat or water craft, you should always know your surroundings before turning on your engine. Always walk around your boat to make sure there are no obstructions.

Swimmers should never swim near boats, marinas or boat launches. Electrical currents can flow into the water from boats or the marina, putting swimmers at risk of electrical shock drowning.

Water crafts produce high amounts of carbon monoxide. To help mitigate this risk, ensure you keep your engine properly maintained and exhaust vents clear. This will help avoid carbon monoxide build up.

You should install carbon monoxide alarms inside your boat and test the alarms before each trip onto the water. Remember that carbon monoxide poisoning can feel a lot like seasickness. You may feel dizzy, nauseous or get a headache. If someone experiences any of these symptoms get them directly into fresh air.

All water crafts should be inspected each year. Any cords used should be intended for marine use as household cords are not designed to be near water.

Every passenger is required by law to have a proper fitting Canadian-approved personal flotation device (PFD). You are also required to have a fire extinguisher, an anchor, manual water pump and a paddle. It is never a bad idea to carry extra sunscreen, hats, a first aid kit and extra drinking water.

And lastly, remember -- water on the water, beer on the pier. Do not consume any alcohol or drugs while operating a water craft. As long as you think ahead and take the proper safety precautions, you can enjoy the many great waterways that Southern Ontario has to offer.
