The Pan American Games are often considered a testing ground for up-and-coming athletes in the Americas -- a dry run, of sorts, for many athletes who will go on to one day represent their countries in world championships and Olympic Games.

In other cases, athletes who have already performed on the international stage and are looking for more reps are apt to be in on the action.

In all, approximately 6,700 athletes from 41 countries are expected to compete in 39 sports and 62 disciplines when the 18th Pan Am Games open in Lima, Peru July 26 and run until Aug. 11.
