You may have noticed white YDSS signs and construction vehicles on Mulock, west of Bayview Avenue. What's going on?
JUST THE FACTS
- The region is building a second sewer pipe (force main) alongside the existing aging one. This “twinning” allows wastewater flow to be shifted to the new pipe to inspect and maintain the older pipe and act as a backup pipe to reduce the risk of service disruption as well as possible environmental harm from sewage spills.
- Construction of temporary work sites began mid-June and is expected to take three years.
Here's what Newmarket residents can expect during forcemain twinning construction
- Work will run 5.2 kilometres, roughly along the path of the Holland River.
- This is the only force main in York Region that hasn't been twinned.
- Most work will be done underground, away from traffic and residential zones.
Thirteen trees will be removed at Madsen Greenhouse beginning July 8. When the force main is completed, 63 trees and 150 shrubs will be replanted at this site.
