One busy GO Transit parking lot gets an expansion in Vaughan.

King-Vaughan MPP Stephen Lecce announced on May 24 that the Maple GO Station will add 180 new parking spaces to help relieve parking woes in the community.

“The expansion of parking at Maple’s GO station will relieve pressure on King and Rutherford GO, and help reduce gridlock in the community,” said Lecce who made the announcement at the parking lot of the station.

The additional parking spaces located at Rodinea Road have been permanently added to the GO station parking lot, which brings the total number of spots to 1,351.

A great number of commuters in King Township and Vaughan rely on GO Transit to get to work, school or appointments on a daily basis.

“The biggest issue I keep hearing from families and commuters is the traffic gridlock in the GTA is out of control,” the MPP said. “I made a commitment to expand parking and GO stations in King and Vaughan, and I am firmly committed to delivering on those upgrades this year, so that we tackle the debilitating gridlock across the region.”

The Maple GO Station is located between two other GO stations on the Barrie line -- King City GO Station and Rutherford GO Station -- in the King-Vaughan riding.

Approximately 1,000 customers use the King City station every day, which is one of the busiest GO stations on the Barrie line.

The station is expected to see upgrades in the near future as well including 500 new parking spaces, a new kiss and ride drop-off, a new platform, two new pedestrian bridges and bicycle facilities by 2022, according to Metrolinx.

“It’s about making sure we’re doing everything we can to make their commute as easy and efficient as possible to spend more time on the things that matter most,” Lecce said.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged $595 million in federal funding for Barrie GO line corridor improvements, yorkregion.com reported.

The Barrie GO train corridor, which includes stations at York University and in Vaughan, King Township, Aurora, Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Bradford and Barrie will see several improvements.

They include construction of approximately 51.2 kilometres of new track between the line’s end point at Toronto’s Union Station and Barrie, some train layover facilities and station upgrades. Some of the funds will help complete parking upgrades in Maple.
