Parks are play spaces where children meet, pretend and run wild. This summer, treat the kiddos to something out of the ordinary -- a tall climbing cage, swing court, dinosaur bone discovery, pebble water-park or natural log climbers. Here are York Region’s coolest parks.
All Our Kids Playpark -- Newmarket
The all-ages park is known locally as Dinosaur Park, after the mock fossils buried in the giant sand pit. The park is laid out in a pinwheel pattern with a sand pit, swings and playground, trees and benches, climbers, and workout equipment for adults, along with a gazebo in the centre.
Lake Wilcox Park -- Richmond Hill
The park was designed with both the natural and cultural heritage in mind -- the natural lush of the Oak Ridges Moraine and the history of the area as an Indigenous settlement place. The custom playground, with its use of green, trees, pebbles and boulders, fits into the natural landscape.
Rouge Crest Park -- Richmond Hill
Rouge Crest Park features a swing court with close to a dozen different types of swings. There is also a vertical playground, where children climb and play in a 25-foot tall cage, and a water jet feature. there are also a number of naturally occurring patterns mimicking fish scales, whirlpools, pebbles, bubbles, stars sea shells.
Blue Heron Park -- King Township
Due to a significant slope, the town opted to work with the mechanics of the site, where the slide is built into the side of the hill. The park also features more natural elements, such as climbing logs instead of a man-made spider climbers.
Tasca Park -- King Township
Tasca Park is King’s first fully accessible park, where the play areas are connected by ramps instead of stairs. The 20-acre community space features a large play structure, water park, stone labyrinth and outdoor fitness equipment scattered along a trail loop surrounding the park.
