Province resumes environmental assessment of Greater Toronto Area West corridor

Picking up where the project stopped in 2015, the provincial government announced on Wednesday that it would be resuming the environmental assessment of the Greater Toronto Area West corridor.
Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek, who made the announcement, said it’s another way the province is working to get people moving.
Plans for the new 400-series highway, which would connect Highway 400 to Highway 407 by skirting around the north edge of Brampton and Vaughan, were put on hold four years ago.
“By resuming the environmental assessment we will be able to build future transit infrastructure to improve traffic flow and help relieve traffic congestion,” Yurek explained.
“This will provide relief on local roads and parallel highways and help ensure our goods and services and quickly and efficiently move between our cities and towns.”
Yurek said it’s estimated that the new corridor would serve about 300,000 vehicles per day by 2031.
The environmental assessment, which is set to begin today, is expected to be completed by 2022.
An information centre will be open this fall to allow the public an opportunity to comment on the preferred route.
Yurek says they haven’t decided or not if tolls would be added to the new highway.
