What does the future hold for the southernmost area of Richmond Hill?

Highrise buildings, interconnected public transit and rapid population growth are all waiting in the wings in the area around the intersection of Yonge Street and Highway 7, known as the Richmond Hill Centre. The city is scheduled to hold an open house June 26 about how the centre will evolve in the next two decades and invites the public to learn more about a secondary plan in the making.

Identified as a regional centre in both the York Regional official plan and the Richmond Hill official plan, the area is expected to accommodate about 15,800 people and 15,700 jobs over at least a 25-year time frame.

With an estimated 450 people and jobs per hectare, the centre will be home to a large portion of the new residents expected to move to Richmond Hill over the next two decades.

Whether residents in other parts of the country relocating for a better life, or immigrants looking for new homes from elsewhere in the world, the Richmond Hill Centre is expected to be one of their top destinations in the near future.

The area was also identified as an Urban Growth Centre by Ontario in the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe in 2017.

Unique in the GTA, the centre will be built around the intersection of five modes of public transit, including the Yonge subway extension, the Richmond Hill GO line, the Highway 407 Transitway, Viva bus rapid transit and local GO and YRT buses.

Premier Doug Ford announced on April 10 that the province will invest a portion of the $5.6 billion to build the Yonge subway extension from Finch Station in Toronto over the next 10 years, The Liberal reported. Stretching 7.4 kilometres, the extension will include five new stations and two intermodal terminals at Steeles and Richmond Hill Centre Station.

The public is encouraged to attend the open house from 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on June 26 at Langstaff Community Centre (Gymnasium A), 155 Red Maple Rd.
