The Town of Whitcuhurch-Stouffville has a pride flag flying at town hall this month.

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville raised the Pride flag earlier this month in recognition of June as Pride Month. This marks the second year in a row the flag was raised at Town Hall.

“The Pride Flag signifies that Whitchurch-Stouffville is a welcoming community,” Mayor Iain Lovatt. Said. “We are proud to celebrate this universal statement of inclusion and diversity and, through it, communicate acceptance that all are welcome and celebrated in Whitchurch-Stouffville.”

The town raised the flag for the first last year after a delegation from Stouffville District Secondary School including student Beki Tafani and Teacher Katrina Sale asked the town to change its flag policy.

“This is a historic day for Whitchurch-Stouffville. Last year council was delegated by some incredible students from the Stouffville District Secondary School Gay Straight Alliance,” Lovatt said.

Sale was in attendance for the flag raising and said the progress made in the last year alone in the town on LGBTQ+ issues has been inspiring, whether it be the Pride in the Park event planned for September or 19 on the Park playing Pride movies this month.
