Former York-Simcoe MPP Julia Munro dies at age 77

Former York-Simcoe MPP Julia Munro has died at the age of 77.

The Star's Robert Benzie reported the news June 12, but the details of her death are not known at this time. Munro stepped down from her post as MPP for York-Simcoe in 2018 after serving the riding for 23 years. In the process, she won six consecutive elections.

“I feel that it is important to step away, for one thing, because I have been working for 50 years,” Munro said at the time of her retirement. She worked as a high school history teacher prior to representing the York-Simcoe riding.

First elected in the 1995 Mike Harris sweep, Munro served as parliamentary assistant to the premier and the ministers of transportation, culture and management board and deputy speaker of the Legislature and a legislative committee chair. She also served as opposition critic in numerous roles since 2003.
