The electrical program at Judith Nyman Secondary School in Brampton has been restored, after students spoke out against the cuts.

“Our teacher announced the electrical program is back and running back again for next year,” said student Sara Toon in an email June 3.

Toon and several other students said previously they were angry and disappointed to find out the program was cut -- despite the Ford government’s promise to put money into the trades.

The Peel District School Board offered the full-time electrical program for students from Grade 9 to 12; it was the only one of its kind in the region.

“Through attrition protection funding, teachers were returned to secondary schools across the Peel District School Board,” said Carla Pereira, the board’s director of communications and community relations, in an email.

“With this funding and following the staffing process, Judith Nyman was able to bring back the teacher that was initially declared excess,” Pereira added.

Teacher Matt Gancasz said the electrical program has seen many students successfully attain an electrical apprenticeship or enter college in the electrical field.
