After what he dubbed, the former Liberal government's lack of “sincerity” for not delivering, King-Vaughan MPP Stephen Lecce said construction of a six-storey parking structure at the already jam-packed Rutherford GO station will “commence this summer.”

Former Liberal Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca, who also served as transportation minister, announced the much needed 1,200 parking spaces in November 2017. At the time, Del Duca couldn't provide the cost of the project. He could only determine when the bidding process would begin to determine who would design, build and finance the station improvements.

Almost a year later, in December, it was announced that EllisDon won a $239-million contract to overhaul the station.

“Our government has allocated $239 million to get it done by 2023. Today we are announcing the start of construction,” Lecce said June 7.

The planned construction also includes a new station building, a grade separation at Rutherford Road, over 100 new bicycle parking spaces and new connections for pedestrian and cyclists.

The construction is part of the GO Rail Expansion program, billed as the “largest” commuter rail project in Canadian history by the Tories.

“So we are very proud not only to make progress but to get moving, get it done quicker and ultimately get the project done,” Lecce said.
