The beaver logo for the Town of East Gwillimbury could be on the chopping block. The town is requesting community feedback on the current logo and what changes residents would like to see.

The town is asking residents to submit their ideas and logos by May 5 -- you will only be contacted if your submission is moved forward for public consultation.

Logos can be submitted in any format, and if selected, the town reserves the right to work with a graphic designer to develop the concept into a working logo. The original creator will be credited.

Residents who have a graphic design background and would like to submit a completed logo package for consideration can contact the Communications team directly to discuss design parameters. According to town staff, the logo should utilize the town's corporate colours (blue and green). Furthermore, the acronym EG has become synonymous with East Gwillimbury; logos may use the acronym as the logo or within the logo itself.

The move comes after a council discussion about replacing signs in the community, including gateway signs at Yonge and Green Lane and at Green Lane and Hwy. 404. The total cost of the sign replacement was estimated by town staff to be in the neighbourhood of $350,000.

Before moving forward with that program, council thought it prudent to review the town’s current logo. “I have lived in East Gwillimbury for 25 years and have never seen a beaver,” Ward 1 Coun. Loralea Carruthers said.

Mayor Virginia Hackson said that it's important for all new signs to be consistent in their design. Ward 2 Coun. Tara Roy-DiClemente said that she has been banging the drum for a new logo for some time. “It’s really a question about bringing us into the modern age,” she said.

While going through the process is exciting, it will have challenges, Ward 3 Coun. Scott Crone said. “It’s not a walk in the park. It sometimes takes longer than you expect. It can cost more than you expect and not everyone is going to like where you land,” he said.
