Due to “financial problems,” the Nashville Firehall, originally scheduled to open in 2019, has been delayed, Kleinburg and Area Ratepayers’ Association said in its latest newsletter.

The association stated contractor Bondfield Construction is facing the financial tightrope to complete the 10,250-square-foot new station, which has three drive-through bays and living quarters for the crews on shift.

Coun. Marilyn Iafrate, who represents Maple and Kleinburg, said the firehall is scheduled to open late summer/early fall.

So far, 60 per cent of the construction work has been completed, she added.

To ease the financial squeeze, Iafrate said Bondfield Construction has been provided with creditor protection in April 2019, adding that “all city contracts of this magnitude have built in protections. In this case, Bondfield has provided a performance bond (by its insurer).”

This means that the bond comes “into effect should the work not be completed due to default or insolvency of the general contractor,” she explained.

“Therefore, the city does not need to procure more funds to complete the project should something happen because the insurer will release the funds being held in the bond to complete any outstanding work.”

However, regardless of the details on finance, “work continues every day to complete the fire hall.”

The ratepayer said the firehall is designed to meet LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) silver certification standards.

It’s also designed to enhance the heritage of the local community within the guidelines established under the Kleinburg-Nashville Heritage Conservation District Study for new developments in the area.

The station will have three drive-through apparatus bays, ancillary offices, hose tower, male and female washrooms and provide living quarters for the crew on shift.

The project will also consist of site services, grading and paving for a site of approximately one acre, site lighting, fencing, landscaping, security and septic system.
