Ontario Supporting New French-language Secondary School in Vaughan

Province Providing Funding to Purchase Land for New School

Ontario's government is protecting what matters most by investing in new local schools to help provide our students with a world-class education system that ensures they have the skills they need to succeed. The province is providing $22.6 million in funding to help secure the location for a new French-language Catholic secondary school in Vaughan.

"Today's announcement marks an important step forward in the creation of a vital new addition for the French-language community in Vaughan," said Lisa Thompson, Minister of Education.

Funding from the Government of Ontario will support the Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir in purchasing the land for the new school building from its current owners, the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB). It will also provide YCDSB the opportunity to address renewal needs for existing schools.

The new facilities will be built on five acres of land at the site of the former St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Elementary School in Vaughan. When construction is completed, the new school will feature enough space for more than 400 students from grades 9 to 12, as well as three new licensed child care rooms with space for 49 children.

"Our government is committed to ensuring students and families have access to high-quality learning environments that set the stage for academic success," Minister Thompson added. "I'm proud our government is investing in the future of French-language education in Vaughan so that students, families and the local community can have the space and supports to continue to grow and thrive."

Ontario recently announced Education that Works for You, a new plan to modernize curriculum, modernize classrooms and empower educators to better prepare students for the realities of today's modern world. By supporting new school infrastructure projects, the government is helping education work for communities like Vaughan.

"This is good news for the residents of Vaughan-Woodbridge. I look forward to this new school becoming a place for our community to gather for generations to come. This is a great step in the right direction to see shovels in the ground and development in progress," said Michael Tibollo, MPP for Vaughan-Woodbridge.
