The federal government is making it easier for Georgina residents and the Chippewas of Georgina Island to connect and do business online.

The government recently announced a $5.2-million investment to build a high-speed digital highway for Udora and Georgina Island First Nation.

These digital highways -- essential for schools, hospitals, libraries and businesses -- move data in and out of communities.

High-speed connectivity will have a great impact on First Nation businesses and day-to-day services, said Chief Donna Big Canoe of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation.

“Our medical health building and school will have greater ability to provide support to our members during the difficult winter season when access to the First Nation is limited,” she said. “Our economy will greatly improve by allowing us to communicate at greater speeds and conduct First Nation business in a timely manner.”

The funding parcel is part of the federal government’s Connect to Innovate plan, investing about $500 million by 2021 across the country to ensure rural and remote communities have high-speed connectivity.

“Broadband internet service is key for the prosperity of rural communities,” said Minister of Rural Economic Development Bernadette Jordan.

“By providing better broadband connections, we are increasing the potential for economic growth and diversification.”
