As the need for safe and affordable housing increases in Canada, the government has made plans to give Canadians more options for places to live.

In May 2018, the Canadian Government launched the National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF). This is the largest program of its kind in Canadian history.

Today (May 22) in Brampton, Adam Vaughan, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development (Housing and Urban Affairs), on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and the Minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), announced a federal government financial commitment of over $13.75 million for the construction of the BBCFR 6-storey Affordable Housing Building.

“Everyone deserves an affordable place to call home, which is why we are proud to be supporting this project through the National Housing Strategy," said Vaughan. "It will be more than just a safe and affordable place to live here in Brampton, it will be key to a better life for the residents who will soon call it home.”

The Building hopes to achieve a 45.9% reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions when compared to the current National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings.

With the commitment by the NHCF, and the investments of other partners like the Region of Peel, in cooperation with the City of Brampton, this project by Brampton Bramalea Christian Fellowship Residences Ltd. will provide 89 new units of affordable housing and one market, taking at least 45 families off the Region of Peel Centralized waiting list.

“For more than 10 years, we have been working towards helping our community’s lower-income families through providing affordable housing," said Randy Neilson, the President of Brampton Bramalea Christian Fellowship Residences Ltd.

"Now, with the help of CMHC, the Region of Peel, the City of Brampton, our friends at LIV Communities and the prayers of our BCF Church family, we are excited to be able to provide 89 affordable housing units that will help lower-income families enjoy a healthy, affordable, housing solution that will enrich every area of their lives.”

Brampton Bramalea Christian Fellowship Residences Ltd. is a charity organization formed to provide affordable rental housing to families of low income, as well as eased conditions associated with being aged or with having a disability.

Through the NHCF, the Government plans to work with partners to build up to 60,000 new affordable homes and repair up to 240,000 existing affordable and community homes over the next 10 years.
