Throngs of families took advantage of a bright, sunny day to check out York Region’s first responders.

It was the second joint effort of York Regional Police and the Regional Municipality of York to welcome the public to the Community Safety Village at Bruce’s Mill Conservation Park to observe two important weeks of awareness.

The four-hour event on May 11 served to kick off Police Week and marked the conclusion of Emergency Preparedness Week.

York Regional Police’s ceremonial mounted unit, including Brenda Mulroy aboard Parker (left) and Melanie Wynn with Pearl, make new friends.

“It’s just a show-and-tell for everyone to get an idea what we do,” said YRP special events co-ordinator Carrie Rutledge. “And, we get a chance to show off our toys.”

Firefighters doused blazes. Paramedics showed off their equipment and skills. Police displayed several units, including undercover, air, RIDE, mounted and emergency teams.

And it was all to the delight of an estimated two to three thousand attendees.
