Brampton Is About to Get the GTA’s Only Nighttime Cricket Pitch

Brampton is about to be the only city in the area that has a cricket pitch which can be used at night, and it’s fitting given how popular the sport is in the city.

The news was announced at Brampton Cricket League’s 10-year anniversary gala and it’s been a long time coming. The league has grown rapidly and it’s been asking for years for the city to improve infrastructure to facilitate that growth.

The league has been filling the gap by renting portable lighting that operates from diesel generators but it’s an expensive option and has prevented them from hosting late evening games.

Now that’s going to change because the city has officially announced a new cricket pitch will be built in Teramoto Park in the area of Queen Street and Chinguacousy Road. The president of Brampton Cricket Leauge, Faraz Saleem, says it’s going to be a game-changer.

“This will be a first in the Region of Peel and will promote the game to Brampton residents. This will also help us manage the growth and the demand associated with cricket by allowing us to accommodate additional teams and players,” explains Saleem.

Currently, the league operates at capacity with 32 teams. The hope that once the new pitch is built with the option to accommodate late evening games, they will be able to start accepting new teams.

The league has already held successful tournaments in the past, even one in 2015 that sold out in two days, and there are plans to go even bigger -- Mayor Patrick Brown says the city plans to try and attract the GT20, Canada’s largest cricket tournament.

Brown says the city plans to improve grass cutting to keep it at a competitive level, add more pitches and ultimately increase capacity.

The new cricket pitch is slated to open later this year in July.
