Government of Canada announces winning bid to create new independent climate institute

Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, announced the winning bid to create the new and independent climate institute, by the Pan-Canadian Expert Collaboration. The Collaboration represents more than 15 diverse and reputable organizations across Canada, which will establish an independent, policy-oriented, not-for-profit national institute focused on clean growth and climate change.

The Pan-Canadian Expert Collaboration (expected to begin operations this spring) will create a new institute to generate, communicate, and mobilize trusted information, policy advice, and best practices for Canadians, governments, and stakeholders. It will be supported by highly credible and inclusive research, analysis, and engagement with leaders, experts, and practitioners from across Canada.

As of this year, the Pan-Canadian Expert Collaboration will be eligible to receive up to $20 million over five years to implement its vision for the institute.

Environment and Climate Change Canada received proposals from many strong candidates. The department would like to thank all applicants who submitted an application under the Expert Engagement Initiative.

• Environment and Climate Change Canada conducted a rigorous assessment to evaluate all complete and eligible proposals based on parameters outlined in the publicly available applicant guide. While the institute is a stand-alone organization, it will work closely with 15 partners to achieve its objectives.
• Funding of up to $20 million over five years for the institute was announced in Budget 2018.
