Jag Sharma appointed Newmarket's new chief administrative officer
Sharma will fill vacancy left by former CAO Bob Shelton, who retired after more than 40 years of service

The Town of Newmarket has appointed Jag Sharma as its new chief administrative officer.
Following a recruitment process involving several highly qualified candidates, according to the town, council made the decision to appoint Sharma to fill the vacancy of former CAO Bob Shelton.
Sharma, who has been with the City of Oshawa since 2011 serving as community services commissioner and later city manager and CAO, will begin his role on April 1.
“Mr. Sharma’s previous experience managing a dynamic and growing municipality makes him a good fit with our town as we work toward our future goals and carry out our important strategic priorities,” Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said. “Most importantly, he understands that collaboration and innovation are paramount when building a community that is ready to meet the future and be well beyond the ordinary.”
Sharma holds a master's of business administration from Queen’s University, bachelor of science in electrical engineering, participated in the Schulich School of Business’ executive program in municipal leadership and is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
He has also been an member of the Ontario Municipal Administrators’ Association, Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators, Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario and of the Municipal Finance Officers’ Association of Ontario.
“I am very excited to be part of the Town of Newmarket team,” Sharma said. “I look forward to working with Newmarket council, the community and the great staff to continue to create, innovate and move the town forward to deliver outstanding results.”
Sharma is taking over the position following the retirement of Shelton after more than 40 years of service.
Esther Armchuk is acting CAO until Sharma takes his post next month when she will then resume her post as corporate services commissioner.
“Council and staff extend their sincere appreciation to Ms. Armchuk for her leadership and for ensuring we carry out our day-to-day business as usual, while helping to maintain the unique corporate culture we have here at the town,” Taylor said.
The public have the opportunity to meet and speak with Sharma at the town’s upcoming annual open house on April 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the municipal offices.
