2018 Sunshine List reveals top earners at York Region school boards

Ontario released its Sunshine List March 27 and Karen Friedman, associate director of education schools and program at York Region District School Board ranked as the top earner among staff at York Region school boards, with an annual pay of $236,721.48 in 2018.

Over the course of three years, Friedman's salary has increased by about 6.4 per cent from its reported $222,507 in 2015.

After Friedman, is Scott Yake, associate director of education at York Region District School Board (YRDSB), who earned $221,441.60. His salary has increased from $216,188 in 2017.

Meanwhile, Steven Reid, chief assessment officer at YRDSB, has an annual salary of $164,245.02, and Christos Sarellas, an education officer, earned $167,176.42.

In addition, the website Ontariosunshinelist.com gives some overall assessment of the disclosed salaries.

The list shows that there are 420 secondary teachers at YRDSB with the average salary of $103,497, 195 elementary principals with an average of $123,289, 133 elementary teachers with an average salary of $107,076, 80 elementary vice principals with the average of $107,076 and 72 secondary vice principals with the average $112,702.

The list also shows that there are three senior managers of finance with average pay of $135,404 and three co-ordinators of psychological services at $118,383.

Meanwhile, the director of education of York Catholic District School Board, Albert Falconi, was paid $176,399.93.

Other top earners at the Catholic board include Lynda Coulter, director of labour relations, at $170,792.74, and Carlos Sousa, an education officer, at $168,632.59.
