In the mid-1800s until highways became prevalent in the mid-1900s, Newmarket was a convenient afternoon stopover for tea.

Toronto vacationers were making their way to or returning from Jackson’s Point by horse and buggy or coach, and later cars.

As such, the former King George Hotel on Main Street at Timothy Street in downtown Newmarket was a beacon to refresh, enjoy light fare and tea before heading out.

The main coach stop for the village that grew to 3,500 around the early 1900s was at "The George.”

Michael and Donna D’Angela own the property and are in the process of renovating, turning what was the dining hall/tea room into a brew house and restaurant.

On March 19, the D’Angelas invited local dignitaries and politicians to stop by to learn the history of the building and enjoy The Last Tea, which included sandwiches and pastries along with fine teas.
