A sign in front of the historic Thornhill home at 39 Centre St. says “Josiah Purkiss, store keeper, 1856.” Vaughan received an application to allow rezoning and a professional office in this home.
Just the Facts
Location: 39 Centre St. This Thornhill home in Vaughan is west of Yonge Street, on the south side of Centre Street.
Application: A zoning amendment and site plan application to allow a professional office in the heritage building with no proposed modifications to the building. Two parking spaces are proposed offsite at 140 Brooke St.
Architectural value: This home is included in the Canadian Inventory of Historic Buildings and the Ontario Inventory of Buildings.
More details: The sign advising of the application and amendment was installed August 2017. The historic home next door is 33 Centre St. which also has an application to allow office and retail use on the land with 19 parking spaces. Also close by is the Robert Shuter house, one of Thornhill Village's oldest houses at 19 Centre St. An application asks that the house be rezoned to allow one- and two-storey additions to the rear of the building. It will be used for professional offices.
