5 York Region students get $5K through Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship

Applicants to the scholarship tend to have experienced dire life

Five high school students from York Region have each received $5,000 from the nonprofit Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship for 2019.

The nonprofit said 170 students chosen to receive their post-secondary scholarships.

Of these students, five were from York Region. One was from Markham, one from Vaughan and three from Richmond Hill. Each student is said to have a “compelling story,” showing “their success over adversity.”

The winners include 10 recipients of the $10,000 Horatio Alger National Entrepreneurial Scholarships, awarded to students who demonstrate a desire and ability to be entrepreneurial in a chosen field, and 160 Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarships valued at $5,000 each.

Applicants to the scholarship tend to have experienced dire life situation which include abandonment by a parent or guardian, suffered from physical, mental or sexual abuse, experienced disability or serious illness or faced homelessness among other reasons. Also, the average annual family income of the recipients was $24,698.

Since 2012, more than $5.1 million in scholarships have been awarded to 866 deserving young Canadians.
