Here are Some Accomplishments Burlington Has Made Over the Past 100 Days

The past 100 days in the City of Burlington have been anything but uneventful, to say the least.

March 12, 2019, marked 100 days since Burlington's new city council was inaugurated.

Since the new council was inaugurated on Dec. 3, 2018, the city has accomplished a lot. In a recent blog poston Mayor Marianne Meed Ward's website, 30 of these accomplishments were highlighted.

Some of these accomplishments have included imposing an interim control bylaw - freezing development downtown (near the Burlington GO station) for one year, delivering the lowest tax increase in eight years (near the rate of inflation at 2.99 per cent for the city portion, and two per cent once combined with the Halton Region and education taxes), approving free transit for seniors at off-peak hours Monday to Friday, and free transit for low-income residents who qualify for the region's SPLIT subsidized transit pass.

Other accomplishments have included adding $100,000 annually in new tree planting funding to improve the health of the city's tree canopy and to help alleviate tree loss in due to Emerald Ash Borer, the city also launched a private tree bylaw in the Roseland community.

In addition, the city has also increased funding for Burlington's infrastructure to address annual needs and eliminate backlogs in projects, along with approving a resolution that states Burlington is not interested in a City of Halton - in response to the Province's Regional Review.

Burlington also voted to opt-in on having cannabis retail stores in the city.

It's pretty safe to say that there is never a dull moment in the city.

Despite the city achieving all it has thus far since December, Meed Ward still acknowledges that a lot of work still has to be done.

"There is still much work to do over the next four years, but your council is off to a great start and it all begins with respect for each other, for residents and for staff," Meed Ward stated in the blog post.

"One of the most important things we have done is set a positive tone of respect and collaboration among council and with staff, creating positive energy throughout city hall. By inviting and welcoming diverse perspectives in a respectful environment, we set the stage for great ideas to emerge to address the challenges we face in our community... together."
