UPDATE: Markham gas leak shut off, evacuees returning to homes

Markham Fire Emergency Services and YRP are on scene in Markham for a natural gas leak

Markham Fire and Emergency Services responded to a scene in the area of Ridgecrest Road and Castlemore Avenue in Markham for a natural gas leak on Feb. 7.

According to Markham Fire's tweet at around 1:07 p.m., homes in the immediate vicinity of the leak were evacuated as a precaution.

Castlemore Public School was made aware of the situation and emergency personnel were on scene, however, the school was not evacuated, according to Licinio Miguelo, spokesperson for York Region District School Board.

Just after 3 p.m., Markham Fire tweeted that Enbridge has shut the gas off in the area of the leak and repairs are ongoing.

Evacuees are being allowed into their homes, with the air quality inside being tested beforehand to ensure the buildings are safe.

Along with firefighters, York Regional Police officers are on scene.
