If you’ve been in the Yonge and Centre Streets area of Thornhill, you may have noticed an old heritage house with a sign out front. Read below to find out more.

JUST THE FACTS

Property: Robert Shuter house, also known as Homewood Hall. One of the village's oldest houses, it was built in 1825 by carpenter Robert Shuter. It has been, since 1869, the home of many of Thornhill's doctors.
Location: 19 Centre St. in Thornhill, Vaughan, west of Yonge Street on the south side of Centre.

What’s going on: An application asked that the house be rezoned to allow 1- and 2-storey additions to the rear of the heritage building. It will be used for professional offices.

History:

Rezoning was approved on several conditions including: Vaughan’s planning department approval of the final site, lighting and landscape plan as well as building elevations and signage details. The owner needs to get a heritage permit.

Update:

The zoning is in effect. Owners are working on satisfying the city’s conditions of approval.

Vaughan’s planning department is satisfied that the proposed rezoning is compatible with the existing and permitted uses in the surrounding area. The development planning department supports the approval of the zoning bylaw amendment.
