Following the resignation of former board chair Anna DeBartolo in January, the City of Vaughan said on Feb. 25 that nominations are open for the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) byelection.

The nominations are accepted until 2 p.m. on March 11 to elect a trustee in Vaughan’s Ward 1 and 2, the area DeBartolo oversaw.

The new electee will joined the current YRDSB board, whose term will end in November 2022.

The announcement comes after some people expressed their unhappiness over YRDSB’s decision to hold the byelection and not choose the runner-up Charline Grant, calling it a waste of resources.

DeBartolo was re-elected in the October election, winning 4,437 votes to defeat runner-up Grant, who earned 2,161 votes.

Candidate eligibility

To run for office as a school board trustee, a candidate must be a Canadian citizen at least 18 years of age and reside in the area of jurisdiction of the board. Candidates will be disqualified if they are an employee of any school board or if any legislation prevents them from holding municipal office. Review full eligibility requirements before submitting your nomination.
