To accommodate the future widening of Hwy. 400 to a 10-lane highway, with HOV lanes in both north-south directions, the King-Vaughan Road overpass is being reconstructed.
Just the facts:
- King-Vaughan Road remains closed between Weston Road and Jane Street, and will reopen when the overpass bridge is complete;
- Construction of the overpass started in April 2018. Road work was halted for the winter, and will resume in April 2019;
- Construction is expected to be complete by November 2019;
- As a detour, motorists are encouraged to use Kirby Road between Weston Road and Jane Street;
- The project includes: demolition of the old bridge, which was completed in 2018; construction of new bridge foundations, piers, retaining walls, girders and deck; reconstruction of embankments; adding guide rails and signage; and paving and pavement markings;
- When complete, King-Vaughan Road will be one lane of traffic in either direction, shoulders on both sides of the road and a sidewalk on the south side of the road;
- The budget is $102.5 million, which includes construction of the King-Vaughan Road overpass bridge and widening Hwy. 400 between Major Mackenzie Drive and King Road;
- In the end, Hwy. 400 will be eight lanes across, with media HOV lanes in each direction -- with plans for future expansion to 10 lanes;
