York Region athletes bound for Canada Winter Games in Alberta

A total of 26 athletes and coaches with Team Ontario

A contingent of 350 athletes, coaches and support staff will represent Ontario at the Canada Winter Games, which run from Feb. 15 to March 3 in Red Deer, Alta.

Among them are 26 York region residents listed by their hometown and sport.

The Games are held every four years, alternating between summer and winter, and are a developmental showcase for Canada’s top young athletes.

Aurora -- Zak Jackson, speed skating

Georgina -- Owen Macumber, judo

King City -- Gwen Binsfeld, skiing

Markham -- Catherine Choi, badminton; Rachel Chan, badminton; Gabriella Guo, figure skating; Keagan Young, judo; Bennet Lai, speedskating; Liam Marrison, squash; Alexander Bu, table tennis; Jin Wu, table tennis; Jennifer Lee, badminton coach; Cherie Piper, hockey coach

Newmarket -- Teagan Grant, hockey; Jada Laliberte, ringette; Joanne Lee, wheelchair basketball.

Richmond Hill -- Colin Jia, badminton; Jacqueline Cheung, badminton; Stanley Feng, badminton; Zoe Pekos, biathlon; Derek Thorsell, gymnastics coach

Thornhill -- Julia Ng, badminton; Rio Morita, figure skating; Rachel Krapman, judo
