It’s full STEAM ahead at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library after the organization took top honours in a national competition.
The library was awarded first place in the 25th annual Larry Moore challenge at a Ontario Library Association conference on Feb. 1.
The challenge encourages innovation in libraries across Canada.
Whitchurch-Stouffville won for a new program launched Jan. 27, which includes stations set up throughout the library showcasing various aspects of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math).
The library’s new certificate program is geared to children and teenagers, particularly important as the need for STEAM skills continues to grow in the 21st century workplace, library CEO Margaret Wallace said.
“In today’s world, new skill sets are expected for almost all types of work. Teamwork across disciplines is the new normal,” she said in a statement.
“One example would be an architect, who uses technology, engineering, art and mathematics in their job as part of a project team creating beautiful and functional structures.”
Children and teens participating in the program earn buttons or stickers and a certificate of achievement.
For winning the award, the library will receive $5,000, which will be used to further enhance the STEAM program.
