An extreme cold warning is in effect for York Region and is expected to last until Feb. 1.

According to Environment Canada, a frigid arctic air mass and strong winds will result in wind chill values of -30 to -35 C starting the night of Jan. 29 and lasting until the morning of Feb. 1.

The frigid wind chill values will be caused by the combination of overnight low temperatures between -20 and -25 C, with winds gusting between 50 and 70 km/h, Environment Canada says.

Residents should cover up, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill, the government agency warns.

Milder temperatures are expected to return during the day Feb. 1.
