The non-profit Hospice Vaughan has received $2 million in provincial funding, the city said in a statement Friday, Jan. 18.

Hospice Vaughan provides support to individuals facing a life-limiting illness or the loss of a loved one. Its services include in-home visiting volunteers, a day program and grief and bereavement support.

A new residential hospice is also expected to open later this year, and it will include 10 beds, the city added.

“Today is a great day for Hospice Vaughan and the families who rely on their important services,” said Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, who made the statement during an event at Hospice Vaughan.

“As mayor and honorary chair of the 'Better Ending' Capital Campaign to build a residential hospice and centre of excellence, I am pleased that the provincial government reaffirmed their $2 million commitment to this project,” he added.

“This contribution will bring us one step forward on our journey toward building this state-of-the-art facility in Vaughan.”

So far, the campaign has already raised more than $10 million toward the total $12-million cost of the hospice building.

In late 2018, it was decided that the new facility will be called Mario & Nick Cortellucci Hospice Palliative Care Centre of Excellence after the family stepped forward with a $3-million donation.

“When the doors to this facility open later this year, our citizens will have peace of mind knowing critical services, such as counselling and emotional and spiritual support, will be available for loved ones receiving hospice care.”
