To improve the province’s transportation network, Hwy. 400 is being widened in both directions along a stretch that passes through Vaughan and King Township.
In order to widen the thoroughfare, there are a number of bridges and overpasses that are also under construction as well.
Just the facts:
- Construction is taking place along an 11-km stretch of Hwy. 400 between Major Mackenzie Drive to King Road.
- By the end, Hwy. 400 will be eight lanes across, which includes a median HOV lane in each direction. Widening the bridge overpasses will allow future expansion to 10-lanes.
- Roadwork started in June 2017 and is expected to be complete by the end of 2021.
- Traffic impacts include narrow lanes, narrow shoulders and reduced speed to 80 km per hour.
- The project was delayed about a year due to unforeseen ground conditions as well as utility conflicts.
- Part of the project also included the widening of the Kirby Road overpass bridge, which is now complete.
- Crews are currently working to extend the crossing over the East Humber River, which is just south of King Road.
- Work that remains to be completed includes: widening Hwy. 400 and extending culverts; realignment of ramps at Teston Road; rebuilding the overpass bridge at King-Vaughan Road; replacing the median wall barrier; installing lighting; and final paving and marking lanes.
- According to the province, daily traffic along this section of Hwy. 400 is about 122,500 vehicles per day.
- The budget is $102.5 million.
