Zoe Katzberg knows what summer romance feels like.

The Vaughan resident also knows what it feels like to have your relationship crumble.

These scenarios form the backdrop of two songs she has released. Her debut single Warning is about summer love. Blowing Smoke, the next song she released, is a slow-tempo song about breaking up.

“I wanted to give a real-life look into a reality of a teen’s relationship,” Zoelly shares. “I wanted to touch on the negativity and hurt that can be caused when one is getting carried away by one’s personal bad habit.”

But Zoe (or Zoelly, her stage name) says she also writes about friendship troubles in addition to more uplifting songs.

Her track Blowing Smoke has grown to be a favourite for the 16-year-old singer/songwriter.

“I haven’t been able to stop singing this song ever since it was written,” she said.

The Grade 11 student has loved singing since she was 8, but only started writing and producing seriously two years ago.

“I want people to connect no matter what they are going through,” she said. “People turn to music when they are in need.”

Another dream is to perform on Broadway.

“What’s so exciting to me is the unknown,” she said. “I love wondering where this journey is going to take me. Just knowing that my life is a big book currently being written, and I am the writer."

Questions and Answers

Q. When did you know you wanted to be a singer/songwriter?

A. I knew I wanted to be a singer at about age 8. I stood up and sang at a party and just blew away the crowd … It was how I moved the crowed that made me want to sing. Then I had an opportunity to sing again for a charity show called Unsung Heroes. I got to perform on stage over two nights and from that moment I decided I wanted to sing professionally and create my own music.

Q. Who's the biggest non-musical inspiration in your life?

A. I would have to say my parents. I am very lucky to have two amazing parents who support me in all I do. They taught me that you can do anything you want if you work hard.

Q. What has been your best and worst moment as a musician/artist so far? Please explain.

A. My best moment was the first time I released my own music along with an official video. Having worked through my first song and having it produced and officially released really made me happy. Having a song out there for anyone in the world to hear, and getting messages from random people all over telling you they love your song was really a best moment. The worst moment was a time I sang for a crowd and messed up the lyrics. It was truly embarrassing for me, although I pulled it together and it probably wasn't noticed. I think that’s a worst moment for any singer.
