You may have heard the machinery, or seen the temporary lane closures, but didn’t know what work was being done. A pickup truck and a 90-metre long geophone streamer were used to collect geophysical data. This was core testing done in Thornhill where the Yonge Street subway extension will be built.
Just the facts:
- Where: Along Yonge Street in the northbound centre lane, from Steeles Avenue to Langstaff Road East, at 100-metre intervals, reopening lane closures as they proceed from one location to the next.
- When: Dec. 19 to 22. In February, crews will start geotechnical testing (borehole drilling) along Yonge Street and side streets, from Finch Avenue to Highway 7.
- Extend Yonge subway to Richmond Hill, York Region business leaders urge
Background/context: The preliminary planning design and engineering phase of the Yonge subway extension is underway and will take approximately 12 months to complete. Governance, procurement and property acquisition will take about three years, followed by design, utility relocation and construction that would take about seven years to complete.
- More info: This is a project from Toronto into Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill. It extends 7.4 kilometres north from Toronto’s Finch Station, to the Richmond Hill/Langstaff Gateway Urban Growth Centre at Highway 7. This link will include five stations: Cummer/Drewry, Steeles, Clark, Langstaff/Longbridge and Richmond Hill Centre.
