Park Avenue between Lorne Avenue and Main Street in Newmarket is being overhauled with new sewers, pipes, sidewalks and a new, wide roadway.
Just the Facts:
- Construction started in June 2018 and is expected to be complete by fall 2019;
- There have been about three weeks of delays caused by bad weather, as well as a number of contractor-related delays;
- Construction work includes: Replacing old underground pipes with new ones, including water and wastewater pipes; new standard sidewalks with new tactile plates at each corner;
- The town is standardizing the width of Park Avenue to about seven metres, which varied along the road, which also involves moving natural gas infrastructure and hydro polls;
- Currently, crews are working on improving the temporary asphalt sidewalk and conducting closed-circuit television inspections of the newly installed sanitary sewers. Crews are also installing permanent stop signs and adding temporary road lines;
- Roadwork is working westward from Main Street to Lorne Avenue and the next stage of construction will be along Park Avenue between Victoria Street and Lorne Avenue, which is scheduled to start in the spring or early summer 2019;
- The second stage includes: Construction of new storm and sanitary sewers and new sewer services to the property lines, along with new water mains and water services; and new asphalt road surface, sidewalks and curbs;
- Bike lanes along Park Avenue are diverted to Millard Avenue and Botsford Street during construction; and
- The budget for the project is about $2.92 million.
