Brampton will receive $13.3 million in gas tax funding this year, the Ontario government announced Tuesday (Jan. 8).
That cash is earmarked for Brampton Public Transit and is Brampton’s share of $364 million in gas tax funding going to 107 municipalities cross the province.
Gas tax money is divided up annually based on a formula of 70 per cent ridership and 30 per cent population. The City of Toronto got the bulk of this year’s funding at approximately $185 million.
Here are the 10 municipalities receiving the most gas tax funding this year:
Funding for Ontario’s gas tax program is decided by the number of litres of gasoline sold in the province. Two cents per litre of gas tax revenue is granted to municipalities. The money can be used for either capital or operating costs, including the purchase of buses or expanding service.
Since 2009, Brampton has grown by 22 per cent and Brampton Transit ridership has increased 120 per cent. As of August 2018, ridership had increased 17 per cent year-over-year, according to the city.
A complete list of all the municipal gas tax grants is available on the Ontario Ministry of Transportation's website.
