Engage EG lets volunteers pick and choose their own volunteer experience, time and date.

Recently, the town launched a new volunteer program -- Engage EG -- a one-stop online portal for residents looking to volunteer.

The program is a three-way win for event patrons, volunteers and the town.

“Volunteers become ambassadors or representatives of the town,” said the town’s community parks, recreation and culture manager Aaron Karmazyn.

Prior to streamlining the process, finding volunteers was very informal, he added.

A resident interested in volunteering would sign-up during a town event or leave contact information at one of the town’s recreation facilities.

Now, those wanting to volunteer are directed to the new program where they can register, fill out application forms, add  orientation and training sessions, and choose a volunteer experience.

Opportunities under the Engage EG umbrella surrounds the some of the town’s core annual events, such as the Haunted Halloween and Easter hikes, Mayor and Council pancake breakfast, Remembrance Day ceremony, farmers market, Canada Day festival, Music at Civic Square and Music on the Move.

Initially, the town planned for two volunteer orientation sessions each year, but have since doubled it to four for 2019.

The next volunteer session is Jan. 15, 6 p.m. at the Civic Centre, 19000 Leslie St.
