Winter is coming but the City of Toronto is hiring summer staff for recreation jobs across the city.
The recreation department is taking applications for 9,000 summer positions at summer camps, swim programs and other programs until early February. Many staff return from the previous year but about 17 per cent are expected to be new hires, the city says.
Mayor John Tory told says he has heard from people in some communities that teens don’t get equal access to summer jobs that.
Applicants can apply online by clicking through the website toronto.ca/recjobs to specific advertised positions.
But the city has also been holding sessions where summer job seekers will be told what to expect during the hiring process, as well as resume and interview preparation support.
The last scheduled one is Tuesday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at North Kipling Community Centre at 2 Rowntree Rd.
Mayor John Tory told reporters Monday that he has heard from people in some communities, including north Etobicoke, that teens don’t get equal access to summer jobs that, for many, provide a first experience being part of the workforce.
The city is trying to ensure opportunities are shared across the city with outreach including the information sessions, he said at Pam McConnell Aquatic Centre in Regent Park.
