More than 30 firefighters from King Fire and Emergency Services from the town's three stations collected thousands of food items for their second annual food bank food drive Saturday, Dec. 8.

Last year, local firefighters collected more than $8,000 worth of non-perishable food items and anticipate beating that number this year. Non-perishable food items includes cereal, peanut butter, apple sauce, canned foods, dried pasta and pasta sauce.

They collected food items at various grocery store locations including No Frills and Alloro Fine Foods in Nobleton, Foodland in Schomberg and Coppa’s in King City.

“We filled the back of pickup trucks in addition to our boot drive at each location,” said organizer Mariska Kempers. “Community engagement is what it is all about."

The boot drive is a muscular dystrophy cash donation drive, to fill firefighter boots with coins and bills. It's a Canada-wide firefighter campaign that has collected more than $70 million since 1954.
