This year marks 100 years since bells tolled across Europe as the First World War came to an end.

Four years of battle, death, carnage and heroism ended at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.

More than 650,000 men and women from Canada and Newfoundland served during the war, more than 66,000 gave their lives and more than 172,000 were wounded.

Hundreds of sons and daughters, fathers and mothers shipped out as soldiers and nurses in the name of creating a better world.

Let us commemorate these local men and women from York Region who served during the First World War:

Pte. Sherman Brock

• Born: Aug. 11, 1889, Newmarket
• Enlisted: Feb. 1, 1916, Winnipeg
• Occupation: Lineman
• Arrived: Oct. 13, 1916, England
• 43rd Battalion
• Killed in Action: Aug. 27, 1918. Received War Cross from France, British War Medal and Medal of Victory.

Sgt. Walter Snider McCutcheon

• Born: Oct. 26, 1891, Kleinburg. Lived in Kleinburg, Vaughan.
• Enlisted: March 18, 1916 Toronto
• Occupation: Student
• Arrived: May 6, 1916, England
• 4th Divisional Cyclist
• Discharged: Dec. 7, 1918, remained in England as flight cadet in Royal Air Force

Spr. Norman Earl Campbell

• Born: March 27, 1896, King Township
• Enlisted: Feb. 17, 1916, Aurora
• Occupation: Farmer
• Arrived: Jan. 13, 1917, Havre, France
• 2nd Battalion Canadian Railway Troops 
• Gunshot wound: July 16, 1917, head
• Discharged: July 12, 1919

Pte. Lawrence Omar Allen McMichael

• Occupation: Clerk
• Arrived: Oct. 19, 1915, England
• 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles
• Killed in Action: Oct. 1, 1916, France or Belgium

Pte. Delbert Napoleon Greenwood

• Born: July 22, 1898, Georgina
• Enlisted: June 14, 1916, Sunderland
• Occupation: Farmer
• Arrived: My 14, 1917, England; Nov. 9, 1917, France
• 182nd Battalion to 3rd Res. Battalion
• Killed in Action: Sept. 8, 1918. Received Memorial Cross.

Pte. Ernest William MacDonald
