After years of construction delays, the long-awaited opening of the Union Station food court will finally greet commuters Monday morning.

The 25,000-square foot space, which will open starting at 7 a.m., seats more than 600 and will feature 10 food vendors.

The brand-new food court at Union Square features 10 food vendors and seating for more than 600.

The list of retailers includes a mix of classics, like McDonald’s and Tim Hortons, as well as independent Toronto-based favourites like Loaded Pierogi and Bangkok Buri, a new restaurant from the creators of Khao San Road.

The food court’s opening is the latest development in the redevelopment of Union Station, which has experienced numerous setbacks since the project was given its initial approval in 2009 and was supposed to open in time for the 2015 Pan Am Games. The project’s completion date has been pushed back several times --most recently earlier this month, from late 2018 to an unspecified date in 2019.

Despite setbacks, the opening is a major milestone for the project, says Vanessa McDonald, vice-president of brand strategy and parternships at Osmington, the lease holder for the property.

“It’s the first time there’s really this gathering opportunity at Union Station,” says McDonald. “There’s a real sense of community.”
